Moritz's Platzl tip: Get on your bike

May not only brings sunshine, but also the first long weekends - what are your favorite bike tours around Munich that are ideal for a day trip?
There are two tours that immediately spring to mind. The first is the classic after-work ride for every Munich cyclist - the ride to Ludwigshöhe. You can start in Perlacher Forst, on the famous racing bike highway, a 6-kilometre sprint route. After that, there are various ways to get to your destination, depending on how much time you have and what you fancy: directly through the forest or via a few small villages to enjoy the Bavarian country air. Once you arrive at your destination, a fantastic view of the Alps awaits you from the Ludwigshöhe in Kleindingharting. The way back can be just as direct or you can take a short detour to the Isar and cycle back along it.
The second tour takes us to the regatta circuit. Less hilly, but mainly through the city and suburbs of Munich. And once you're there, there are plenty of opportunities for a break, a picnic or, if you feel like it, a short sprint lap.
If you set off directly from Marias Platzl - which route is particularly beautiful for you along the way?
From Marias Platzl, it's a direct route to the Isar - and it doesn't really matter whether you cycle downstream or upstream. The Isar cycle path is always a highlight in any direction.
Which tour would you recommend to someone who wants to discover Munich for the first time by bike - with a good mix of city, nature and relaxed breaks?
A beautiful route starts directly from the Platzl Hotel and leads through the Residenzgarten towards the English Garden. Here you can take your first break and watch the surfers on the Eisbach wave. The route then continues - with a short or long detour through the English Garden (you can go as far as you like) and then back along the Isar until you reach the Friedensengel. The best sunset in Munich awaits you there. There are opportunities for leisurely breaks at practically every corner along this route. Or you can take a sandwich from the Josefa with you ;-)
What do you think is an essential part of a really successful bike tour and what is the perfect ending for you?
For me, the end of a successful bike tour is definitely the beer garden. Anyone who thinks otherwise has probably never cycled properly! (laughs) So when I'm on my way back, whether from the Isar cycle path or from the racing bike highway in Perlacher Forst, I like to turn off at Mariahilfplatz and end the tour at Ayinger in der Au.
Is there a rather unknown route or a personal insider tip that keeps you getting back on your bike?
In Munich, you can actually just set off from almost anywhere. I bet you'll always end up somewhere worth getting on your bike for after no more than half an hour's ride.
Whether you fancy a sporty sprint or prefer a leisurely cycle through the city and countryside - you'll find plenty of fantastic tours around Munich for your next ride. Our tip: Just go for a ride, let yourself drift and discover your own favorite spot. And if you stop off at our Ayinger in der Au afterwards, the perfect cycle tour is complete. Have a good ride!
