6 Must Dos for Your Weekend Trip to Munich

A weekend trip to Munich gives you plenty of opportunities to explore the city. Get ready for historical sights, authentic Bavarian events and local culinary delights. These are seven things not to miss:

1.Munich's Top Sights

What could be better than exploring a new city on your own? The MARIAS PLATZL is the ideal starting point for your city tour. In just one and a half hours you will have seen all the important sights on foot and still have enough time to incorporate other activities during your Munich weekend break.

All other tips can be perfectly incorporated on the following route:

MARIAS PLATZ HOTEL - Corneliusbrücke - Gärtnerplatz - Viktualienmarkt - Alter Peter - Marienplatz - Residenz & Hofgarten - English Garden - Luitpoldbrücke - Friedensengel - Maximilianeum - Wiener Platz - Museumsinsel - MARIAS PLATZL HOTEL.

If the weather is bad, we recommend taking tram line 19, which stops at almost all of Munich's famous sights. Next entrance from MARIAS PLATZL: Max-Weber-Platz in the direction of Pasing.

2.One of the Most Beautiful Parts of Munich

Feel right at home and immerse yourself in real Munich life! Situated on the banks of the river Isar, the Au is not only one of Munich's most beautiful and popular residential areas, but also the ideal place for a weekend break in Munich. The former village and workers' quarter predates the city of Munich itself and is therefore known as the original Munich. You can still feel this as you stroll through the historic alleyways. Be sure to check out the old hostels on Wiener Platz. You won't find more Munich history in any other place. By the way: If you want to soak up the quaint pub atmosphere of the district, visit the Ayinger in der Au.

3.Art & Culture Weekend Break in Munich

Munich is well known for its cultural diversity, which makes the Bavarian capital a great place for an art and culture weekend. Not to be missed is the Deutsches Museum on the Museum Island. Here you can experience the impressive world of science and technology in interactive exhibitions and events. The Mariahilfkirche - an architectural masterpiece that houses Germany's second largest carillon - is a must for those interested in art and history.

Are you a film and theatre lover? Then catch a show at the Gasteig, one of Europe's largest cultural centres. If you're into retro, take a look at the charming cinemas. Of course, one of Munich's finest and oldest cinemas is located in the Au: The Museum Lichtspiele is a film theatre built in 1910 that creates a unique cinema experience with its nostalgic charm.

4.Typical Bavarian Food

Spend your weekend trip to Munich tasting your way through some of Munich's typical delicacies. Start the day with a typical Weißwurst (veal sausage) breakfast, pick up a tasty snack along the way and enjoy other local specialities such as Kaiserschmarrn (pancakes), Dampfnudeln (steamed noodles), Spätzle (noodles) or Schnitzel (escalope) for lunch and dinner. You can find many culinary highlights in the Old Town and combine them with a digestive stroll through the famous Platzlgassen.

Not far from MARIAS PLATZL is the popular French Quarter. Between Weißenburgerplatz, Pariserplatz and Bordeauxplatz you can enjoy Bavarian specialities or take an international culinary trip. Especially in summer, the quarter comes alive with its many outdoor venues, and you'll be tempted to stop at one of the traditional beer gardens at almost every turn.

5.Traditional Events in Munich

When talking about Munich, do not forget its unique beer culture. And where better to celebrate this than at Munich's traditional events. These alone are worth a weekend break in Munich. Everyone knows about the Oktoberfest, but few people know that Munich also celebrates Carnival.

The hustle and bustle of carnival is best seen in the old town during the carnival days in February and ends on Ash Wednesday with the washing of moneybags in Marienplatz and the traditional fish dinner.

Shortly afterwards, in March, the "fifth season" is ushered in with the tapping of beer on the Nockherberg, and one strong beer festival follows another to get through Lent in good shape, in keeping with the old monastic tradition.

After a summer full of events and the Oktoberfest as the highlight, the Christmas season is just around the corner. Don't miss the cosy Christkindlmarkt on Weißenburger Platz, which locals love to visit.

6.Weekend Trip to the Munich Countryside

If you can't decide between a weekend in the city, in the mountains or at the lake, Munich is the perfect place to combine it all. From the Ostbahnhof (10 minutes from the MARIAS PLATZL HOTEL) you can reach the village of Aying in 30 minutes, from where you can start a hike to the Ayinger Achter. Take the opportunity to join a guided tour of the Ayinger private brewery and learn all about the local beer culture.

In less than one hour you reach other wonderful places around Munich. For example, you can travel to Prien on Chiemsee or to the Austrian mountains at Kufstein without changing trains.
