Anna‑Lena’s Platzl Tip: A Hike Up to the Neureuth

Munich is wonderful — but sometimes I just need a little distance. Fresh air, some movement, and that feeling of getting away without having to take a full‑on vacation. And that’s exactly why this small getaway is just perfect.

What does an ideal short hiking day look like for me?

Nice and simple: off to Gmund on Lake Tegernsee. Either comfortably by train or flexibly by car. You can already feel everyday life slowly quieting down once you arrive. From Gmund, the walk begins – along the famous “Gasse” and up to the Neureuth. The trail is easy to manage, never boring, and just right for clearing your head.

What makes the Neureuth so special?

It’s this perfect mix of movement without stress and reward without guilt. The ascent takes about 45 to 60 minutes and comes with beautiful views that make you want to keep going. At the top, the Neureuth hut awaits – and honestly, a cold Radler and a hearty snack rarely taste better than after a few meters of elevation. You sit there, look down into the valley, let your gaze wander, and think: this is exactly how a day off should feel.

Why is this the perfect little getaway?

Because it simply has it all: nature, exercise, enjoyment – and all without much planning. Whether it’s a spontaneous weekend trip or a mini escape during the week. You meet like‑minded people, strike up easy conversations, and realize how grounding and calming such a short walk uphill can be.

And how does the day continue in a relaxed way?

On the way back down, a stop at the farm shop is highly recommended. There you’ll find coffee and homemade cake – warm, authentic, and just right after the hike. Sit for a bit, soak up the sun, and let the day wind down slowly.

My personal tip for anyone who wants to try it:

Good footwear is all you really need. Those who start early will usually find it quieter at the top – and for anyone who prefers a relaxed pace: just take your time. It’s not about getting up fast, but about enjoying the walk.

The Neureuth isn’t a big adventure – and that’s exactly what makes it so special. A small trip with a big impact, and the perfect way to return to Munich with a smile.
