At the end of November, Munich will once again welcome Germany’s largest annual trade fair for building, furnishing and designing living spaces! From 26 to 30 November, visitors to the so-called “Heim + Handwerk” will be able to learn about tomorrow’s trends in the home improvement industry and gather tips and inspiration for designing their living spaces.

But this event is not just for the avid do-it-yourself fan: “Heim + Handwerk” offers a wide range of design ideas and furnishings with a particular focus on special sustainable and energy-saving innovations. The programme also includes numerous events offering visitors the opportunity to discuss specific issues with experts or simply observe artists and craftsmen at work. Get personal advice from experienced professionals and independent experts or enjoy special shows where you can experience craftsmanship in action! You will enjoy the incredible variety of exhibitors, strolling past the booths offering exceptional designs and ideas, and being inspired!

We here at the Platzl Hotel also attach great importance to our own craftsmanship. To give you a taste of what we have to offer and to challenge your own crafting skills, here are some tips for the perfect, scary jack-o-lantern. After all, everyone has to start small, but then later anything is possible!
1) Prepare to carve your pumpkin as follows: gather a variety of carving knives, tablespoons to scoop out the seeds and strings, one bowl for the pumpkin flesh and another for the seeds, some newspapers to catch the mess and, of course, the most important ingredient: a pumpkin!
2) First, cut out the lid around the stem of the pumpkin. A hexagonal-shaped lid is better than a circle because a round lid may slip into the pumpkin. Also make sure that you cut the lid at a slight angle (about 30-45°) to the inside to make it more stable.
3) Remove the seeds and strings from inside the pumpkin. You may also want to carve out enough flesh so that the pumpkin’s outer walls are only about 1 1/2 inches (3 cm) thick. (The seeds, by the way, can be dried, roasted and salted as a tasty snack.) The carving will only take about 20 minutes!
4) Now you can just start cutting out your design, although it might be best to draw a pattern on some paper and tape it to the pumpkin as a template. About 1/2 inch (1 cm) inside the line drawn on the pumpkin, insert a sharp skewer or nail to create a hole. It is important that you not poke all the way through the pumpkin, only piercing the skin.
5) Then use a saw or a small but sharp knife to carve the face, following the holes.
Tip: to reduce damaging areas you have already carved, cut from the centre outwards.
6) The pumpkin now needs only a small candle and you will have the perfect Halloween decoration!
