MUNICH’S GASTEIG – A FEAST FOR YOUR EARS, YOUR TASTE BUDS AND Y
The Gasteig, a well-known cultural, educational and conference centre, is situated in Munich’s district Haidhausen. Its name derives from its location on “Gachen Steig”, a path that once led from the present-day Ludwigs Bridge to the St Nikolai Bridge along the high side of the River Isar. The Gasteig welcomes up to 6,000 visitors a day to a varied programme of more than 1,800 events a year. The centre was conceived as a space for people to meet, with numerous halls and work rooms on offer. The Gasteig is also home to four Munich institutions that shape the musical and intellectual life of the Bavarian capital. The Munich Philharmonic enchants its guests with top-notch classical performances in its concert hall, the “Philharmonie im Gasteig”. The University of Music and Theatre trains the next generation of performers in its space at the Gasteig, offering both spontaneous and planned student performances in its small concert hall. The Munich community college also organises exhibitions, music presentations and concerts within the Gasteig. Finally, the Munich City Library organises readings, lectures and exhibitions on authors.
The Young Academy Gasteig was founded in 2007 by the Gasteig to get young people without academic degrees interested in art and culture through a variety of projects.
Three restaurants on site help provide energy for all of this culture. “Gast” pampers guests with Asian and Italian delicacies. “Le copain” offers freshly baked breads with tasty spreads and toppings, fresh salads and various pastas. The “Philine” salon warms up guests of the Philharmonic with light aperitifs.
You can reach the Gasteig from the Platzl Hotel with the main route of the suburban train towards Ostbahnhof. The cultural, educational and conference centre is just a few minutes’ walk from the Rosenheimer Platz station.
