FASCHING – SHROVETIDE – IN MUNICH
Put your Jester’s hat on and let’s go: The exciting Fasching carnival season has begun in Munich. Numerous balls and colourful parties are celebrated throughout the city, and you can buy funny costumes and fantastic decorations everywhere in shops. Punch and doughnuts, confetti, streamers, and happy faces – your time will be spent so wonderfully, relaxed and casual. For many people in Munich these are the best weeks of the year.
The “Fools’ Time” reaches its peak from 15 to 17 February. This is when the famous Munich Fasching Street Carnival – organised by the “München Narrisch/the Munich Fools’” association – is held, in which the Munich city centre is transformed into a uniquely exuberant celebration zone. Colourfully dressed people fill the shopping street between Viktualienmarkt and Stachus, while the most popular party hits boom from the speakers. A bright events programme provides cheerful entertainment, and the food & beverage options ensure that no throat stays dry. Munich residents and newcomers look forward to two events every year: first, there is the Rose Monday Procession of the Stupid Knight parade between Sendlinger Tor and the Hofbräuhaus; second, and most especially, there is the dance of the market women on Shrove Tuesday. When the young and young at heart market women get going, there is no stopping at Viktualienmarkt.
