The official opening of the Oktoberfest in Munich starts on Saturday the 17th September 2011 with the entry of the Oktoberfest landlords in their beer tents. Many visitors in the large tents and also the countless people at the Theresienwiese are excitedly waiting for the landlord´s arrival. But primarily in the wonderful city center of Munich there also lots of opportunities to watch the grand entry.
The day of Peter Inselkammer (landlord of the Armbrustschützenzelt which is one of the 14 large beer tents) and its Platzl Oktoberfest Chapel starts at 8:00am. In front of the Platzl Hotel at the Sparkassenstraße in the heart of Munich´s historical city center they get together for the procession. After the first musical performances in front of the Platzl Hotel Munich and at the “Platzl” itself, chapels, carriages and marching bands set in motion at about 9:45am. From there they start walking towards the Herzog-Wilhelm-Strasse where all the landlords and chapels meet each other for the grand entry.
From the Sendlinger Tor you have an excellent position to watch how all of the landlords, chapels and marching bands come from each direction in order to join the procession in the correct order. This spectacle is exactly organized and planned. Here you can already feel the anticipation and excitement for the Oktoberfest and enjoy a very special atmosphere. Around 11:00am the common walk to the festival grounds starts. And with the traditional tapping of the first beer barrel by the Mayor of Munich the Oktoberfest starts.
